“And He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus” (Matthew 14:29, NKJV). Before Peter began to sink, he actually walked on water, however briefly, in response to a single word from Jesus.
It’s easy to focus on Peter’s later doubt and sinking. But this verse captures the moment before that, real faith acted on, stepping out of the boat entirely.
That step required leaving something solid, the boat, for something that shouldn’t have been possible. Faith often requires exactly that kind of departure from safety.
What boat are you currently holding onto that Jesus’ single word, come, is inviting you to step out of, even before you know exactly how it will go?
