“Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12, NKJV). A single cord can be broken with enough force. Multiple cords woven together resist that same force far better.
This is a picture of strength through companionship, not self-sufficiency. Ecclesiastes doesn’t celebrate the lone individual holding everything together alone.
The threefold image is worth noticing too. Beyond just a pair, there’s something even stronger about a wider circle of connection and support.
