“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18, NKJV). This is one of the most quoted proverbs, and for good reason. The pattern it describes is remarkably consistent.
Pride rarely announces itself as pride. It usually feels like confidence, competence, or simply being right, right up until the fall it set up arrives.
This isn’t a call for false humility or constant self-doubt. It’s a warning specifically about haughtiness, an inflated sense of self that stops making room for correction.
