“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23, NKJV). Not keep your reputation, your schedule, or your image. Your heart. Proverbs treats the heart as the source everything else flows from.
That’s a different way of thinking about change than most of us default to. We tend to focus on fixing behavior first, hoping the heart will eventually catch up. This verse suggests the order runs the other way. Guard what’s underneath, and the actions above it start to shift.
Diligence here isn’t a one-time decision. It’s ongoing attention, noticing what you’re feeding your heart with, what you’re dwelling on, what’s shaping your desires day after day.
As you think about the year ahead, this is worth more attention than most resolutions. What’s actually feeding your heart right now, and is it something worth building a year on?
