“Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23, NKJV). Of all the places to find a verse about new beginnings, Lamentations is not where most people would look. But that’s exactly the point.
This verse comes in the middle of a book about loss and grief. The writer isn’t pretending things are fine. He’s naming something true in the middle of a hard season: God’s mercy doesn’t run out, and it doesn’t just show up once. It’s renewed every morning, whether the previous day was easy or brutal.
As a new year begins, it’s tempting to put pressure on January 1st to feel like a clean slate all on its own. This verse offers something steadier. Every morning carries that same fresh mercy, not just the first one of the year.
Whatever last year held, today’s mercy is not a leftover. It’s new. That’s true on January 1st, and it will still be true in June.
