“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick” (Matthew 9:12, NKJV). Jesus says this in response to criticism over the company He kept, tax collectors and sinners, rather than the religiously respectable.

The logic is simple and pointed. A physician’s time is naturally spent with those who are sick, not those who already consider themselves well.

This is worth applying honestly to our own posture. Do we approach Jesus as people genuinely aware of our need, or as people who’ve quietly convinced ourselves we’re mostly well already?

Where do you need to honestly admit sickness, rather than presenting yourself as well enough not to need the physician?

“When He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered” (Matthew 9:36, NKJV). Jesus doesn’t respond to the crowd’s need with impatience. He responds with compassion, seeing their weariness clearly.

Weary and scattered is a fitting description for a lot of ordinary life, tired, without clear direction, moving without a shepherd’s guidance.

It’s worth sitting with the fact that this is exactly the condition that moves Jesus toward compassion, not away from it. Weariness doesn’t disqualify you from His care. It’s what draws it out.
