“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed… which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs” (Matthew 13:31-32, NKJV). This parable is about scale, a tiny beginning producing something far larger than expected.

That’s an encouraging image for anyone whose faith or ministry currently feels small and unimpressive. Small beginnings aren’t a sign of insignificance in the kingdom Jesus describes.

It’s worth remembering this the next time your own efforts feel too small to matter. The mustard seed doesn’t apologize for its size, it simply grows.

What small beginning in your own life deserves patience rather than dismissal, trusting this verse’s picture of eventual growth?

“The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who found one pearl of great price and sold all that he had to buy it” (Matthew 13:45-46, NKJV). This merchant wasn’t reckless. He was a professional, someone who understood the value of pearls better than most.

That’s what makes his decision significant. He wasn’t fooled into an impulsive trade. He recognized real, surpassing value and responded accordingly, giving up everything else without hesitation.

The kingdom of heaven, in this parable, isn’t one valuable thing among many worth collecting. It’s worth trading everything else to obtain.
