“He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39, NKJV). This verse works almost like a riddle, but the point is direct: clinging tightly to your own life is actually how you lose what matters most.

Finding your life, in the way this verse means it, looks like self-protection, self-promotion, arranging everything around your own comfort and security.

Losing your life for Jesus’ sake looks like the opposite, real sacrifice, real surrender, and counterintuitively, that’s where actual life is found.

Where are you currently gripping your own life tightly, in a way this verse suggests might actually be costing you more than it’s protecting?

“Fear not therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:31, NKJV). Jesus makes this point right after noting that not even a sparrow falls apart from the Father’s awareness. If God notices sparrows, His attention toward you runs far deeper.

This verse doesn’t dismiss fear as irrational. It offers a specific reason not to be ruled by it: your value to God, which He’s already established through smaller examples of His care.

It’s easy to feel like one person’s fears or needs are too small to matter to God amid everything else going on in the world. This verse argues the opposite.
