Better Than the Mighty | Proverbs 16:32

Weather presenter pointing to Better Than the Mighty - Proverbs 16:32 verse graphic

“He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32, NKJV). Taking a city is an image of impressive conquest. This verse ranks something quieter, ruling one’s own spirit, above it.

That’s a countercultural ranking. Impressive external accomplishment gets attention. Internal self-rule, quieter and less celebrated, is named here as greater.

This is worth remembering the next time anger tempts you toward an impressive but reckless reaction. Slow anger and ruled spirit are the actual victories worth pursuing.

Where would ruling your own spirit today be a greater victory than any external accomplishment you’re currently chasing?
