“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1, NKJV). It’s one of the most familiar lines in all of Scripture, and yet it says something bold: with God as our shepherd, we are not lacking. Not that life will be easy, but that we won’t be left without what we truly need.
In the ancient world, a shepherd wasn’t a distant manager. He walked with the flock, knew each sheep, found the water and the grass, and stood between the sheep and danger. When David writes this verse, he’s drawing on a relationship of constant presence, not occasional check-ins.
That’s worth sitting with today. Where do you feel like you’re lacking? Peace, direction, provision, rest? This verse doesn’t promise the absence of hard seasons. It promises a Shepherd who is present in them, guiding and providing even when the path isn’t clear to us yet.
